Bournemouth Airport – Terminal Expansion, Transport Interchange & Car Parking

Location: Dorset, UK
Value: £50m investment programme
Services: Structural, Civil & Drainage Engineering
Bournemouth Airport is delivering a major expansion of its passenger facilities, including a significantly extended terminal, a new transport interchange, and associated car parking infrastructure. The development forms part of a phased £50 million investment programme to support long-term passenger growth and enhance the overall airport experience.
Overview
The project required the integration of existing arrivals and departures facilities into a single, modernised terminal while maintaining operational continuity throughout construction. In parallel, the scheme needed to improve surface access, transport connectivity, and car parking provision to accommodate increasing passenger numbers and future growth ambitions of up to three million passengers per annum.
The Solution
The approved scheme brings together the existing terminal buildings through a series of carefully phased extensions, delivering enhanced baggage handling, upgraded security screening, and improved passenger facilities.
A key element of the development is the comprehensive reconfiguration of the airport’s transport interchange, providing clearer and more efficient access for buses, taxis, cyclists, and pedestrians. Complementing this, the project includes enhancements to car parking infrastructure to improve capacity, circulation, and user experience, while integrating effectively with the wider surface access strategy.
GGP’s Role
GGP has a long-standing relationship with Bournemouth Airport, having previously delivered structural works for the plant room extension and the Arrivals Terminal. This established knowledge of the site, combined with experience of working within a live airport environment, informed our appointment on the wider expansion programme.
GGP is providing structural, civil, and drainage engineering consultancy services for the terminal expansion, transport interchange, and associated car parking works, supporting the delivery of this strategically important infrastructure project.
Outcome
The development is designed to provide Bournemouth Airport with increased capacity, improved accessibility, and enhanced operational resilience. The upgraded terminal, integrated transport interchange, and expanded car parking are intended to support future passenger growth, improve the overall journey experience, and reinforce the airport’s role as a major economic and employment hub for Dorset and the wider region.
